Hand Blown Eyebaths

Eyebaths were hand blown before moulding production techniques became more prevalent.  Many hand blown examples can still be found today, sometimes for modest prices.  Here is a small selection of examples. Click on the thumbnails for a full size picture. Many more different styles and colours are pictured in the Members section of the site.

H13.jpg (62972 bytes)  H013.  2 7/8" tall with very long stem. Darkish green but with a 'bright' quality to the colour that is difficult to accurately describe. See also H2.
H16.jpg (82531 bytes)  H016.  Clear glass, 2 5/8" tall.  Very large knob below bowl
H28.jpg (46008 bytes)  H028.  2 1/8 inches tall, green, short stem and deep bowl. Sadly a small crack/ship in one corner.
H8.jpg (57927 bytes) H008.  2 inches tall, footed with very pinched corners to rim. Slight brown tinge.
H20.jpg (52585 bytes)  H020.  Blue glass, 2 3/4 inches tall. Quite small bowl.
H18.jpg (54467 bytes)  H018.  Beautiful amber freeblown short stemmed bath, 2 1/8 inches tall.

Moulded Glass Eyebaths

There is a staggering array of moulded glass eyebaths.  Many are unmarked with no indication of origin or manufacturer.

Equally, many are embossed with logos, maker's marks etc. There are different styles - stemmed, footed, tub or bucket shaped, and reservoir style. The stemmed ones may have smooth or faceted (or paneled) bowls and/or stems.  Colours include clear glass, cobalt, light/pale blue, green, lime green, amber of various shades from dark brown to light honey, or even clear with a tinge of amethyst from exposure to sunlight.

Here is a selection of types and styles and colours, including some very common ones and one or two rarer items.

Tubs

S10.jpg (71161 bytes)  S010.  Classic cobalt blue glass Optrex eyebath. Marked "OPTREX SAFEGUARDS SIGHT" on the base.  This is a more modern example, older ones being slightly more curved, amongst other differences.  Optrex also produced these with French embossing. Also found in clear glass, milk glass (pretty rare), light blue - I even have an amber one from Belgium.
S22.jpg (52235 bytes)  S022.  A style of tub/bucket eyebath which can be found in many delicate shades - blue, peach, yellow, green etc.
usatub.jpg (80492 bytes) S008.  Clear glass tub with a collared lip, as well as indented finger grips. Marked on the base MADE IN / U.S.A. / 4 (in a circle).  1 3/4" tall.

Stemmed - Round Bowls

W1.jpg (44976 bytes)  W001. Moulded blue glass stemmed eyebath. 2.5” tall.  Embossed on base with “MADE IN ENGLAND” and the letter 'W' in the centre in a 'lozenge' shape. Made by Wood Brothers of Barnsley, England. Very common in clear, blue and green. Less common in lime green, or pink/amethyst tinged.
W18.jpg (67020 bytes)  W018.  Again from Wood Bros, but note different stem and bowl style.
R10.jpg (71630 bytes)  R010.  Clear Woods reservoir style.
B21.jpg (62688 bytes)  B021.  Smooth bowl and stem, similar to one of the Woods styles, but no maker's mark.
B4.jpg (27795 bytes) B004.  Clear glass with short thin stem and tulip shaped bowl.
bluestemfacet.jpg (50849 bytes) B014. Here is an example of a combination of round bowl and faceted stem. Again unmarked. Common in blue, green, clear. Although moulded, bowls are hand finished to get shape of 'rolled' rim. Hence many minor slight variations in shape. One of the Woods styles also has the bowls finished in this way.
JBclear.jpg (62144 bytes)  JB003.     Classic John Bull stemmed eyebath with usual "PAT. AUG.14.1917" "JOHN BULL TRADE MARK" "REG.U.S.PAT.OFF" "MADE IN USA" on base. The embossing on this clear glass example is very faint.

Stemmed - Faceted Bowls

Fc2thickbase.jpg (70615 bytes) Here is a very common stemmed faceted eyebath from England. Also has a collar to rim.  Marked "BRITISH MADE" and with a number 2 in the centre of the base.  These are common in clear, blue and green and have various numbers from 1 to 4. Stems may be straight or slightly flared. More unusual examples may have a letter in the centre or come in pale blue or lime green.
FlgBP.jpg (82607 bytes) And here is a very rare lime green one marked "BRITISH MADE" with the letters BP in the centre.
F32.jpg (72644 bytes)  F032. These are possibly the most common you can find.  Faceted bowl with a collar, and faceted stem.  American and marked with a G on the base, for Gayner Glassworks. Rarely found in any other colour, except milk glass. Perhaps even more often found with smaller base and one or two single or double digit numbers on the base as well as the G.
F77.jpg (90630 bytes)  F077. Another very common style from America.  Variously seen with one or more bands of horizontal raised ribs and sometimes parts are frosted glass.  If it is any colour other than clear glass, chances are it is a modern reproduction.
F19.jpg (29205 bytes)  F019. Cobalt blue eyewash from the Whitall Tatum company, embossed on base with the letters W. T. CO., and letter E in centre.    2-˝ inches in height.
F45.jpg (63165 bytes)         F045.  Much smaller bowl than many other faceted examples with bowl seamless to rim - i.e. no collar. Height 2 7/16 inches. No maker's marks.
F42.jpg (56769 bytes) F042. A lovely press moulded pedestal type eye bath in a beautiful shade of light amber glass - honey coloured.  Wide collared lip to the large eight panelled bowl which 'flows' onto the eight panelled stem. The broad, thick base is unmarked. 2 1/2" tall.
F87.jpg (72497 bytes) F087.    Olive, tulip shape but much larger than most 2 11/16 inches tall - very large bowl. No maker's marks.
F33.jpg (62200 bytes) F033.    Tulip shaped bowl with eight panels, best described as recessed into the bowl and rounded off at the lip. Eight panelled stem.  2 5/8" tall

Footed eyebaths

E2.jpg (61186 bytes) E002.  A clear glass moulded eye wash cup. It is has a kind of 'bubble-like' glass foot with a short stem and a fairly deep reservoir part. 2 inches high.
E13.jpg (68996 bytes)  E013.  Amber 2 1/8 inches tall, marked "1100" on base. Only just made it into 'footed' category as it has a bit of a stem. Moulded.
E9.jpg (60697 bytes)  E009.     2 3/4" tall blue glass with ground rim. Probably should be under the 'Blown' heading above - there are no mould marks.

Reservoir Style eyebaths

R18.jpg (105035 bytes) R018. Blue, smooth lip to rim, marked  "Foreign".  2.25 inches tall.
glascosmall.jpg (84041 bytes) R014. Small Glasco reservoir. Marked "GLASCO  PAT 0-99865" with a small 2 in a circle.
R6R7.jpg (75048 bytes) R006 & R007. Two reservoirs of a style very commonly found in UK. Marked with a very small Q and a number between 1 and 6 on base. Embossing often very faint.
R10.jpg (71630 bytes) R010. Clear Woods reservoir.  W and MADE IN ENGLAND.
